Welcome and Introductions
Michael J. Jacobs, MD

President, United States Section of the International College of Surgeons
Birmingham, MI

Keynote Lecture
This special lecture will review the development and refinements of Transhiatal Esophagectomy (THE), contrast it with robotic Minimally Invasive Esophagectomy (MIE), and review reported concerns with MIE, providing information upon which the audience can formulate an opinion regarding he value of applying robotic technology to esophagectomy. After the lecture, the learner should be able to articulate the differences between THE and robotic MIE and the potential morbidity associated with each, and make a judgment as to whether or not robotic MIE should be adopted as the standard approach to esophageal resection and reconstruction worldwide. These considerations may prove of value when assessing allocation of medical resources globally.

Scholarship Competition
The Scholarship Committee of the ICS-US Section accepts submissions from medical students, surgical residents and surgical fellows. Participants have submitted an original clinical research paper with pertinent clinical application for this annual competition. All papers are judged and scored by the members of the ICSUS Section Scholarship Committee prior to the Annual Surgical Update. An additional panel of judges will score the oral presentation of the research during the meeting in Troy. Scores will be tallied and the individual with the highest combined score will be awarded a cash prize. Participants in this session will be presented with the latest research being conducted by some of the brightest young minds in medicine and surgery.

Resident Education
Post Graduate training in surgery has changed dramatically in recent years. Concern related to the next generation of surgeons and their ability to provide adequate patient care has been highly debated at all levels. Participants in this session will have the opportunity to increase their knowledge related to surgical simulation and how it can be an effective training tool. In addition, learners will be presented with updated information on resident work hours, the results of the FIRST trial and the role of coaching in surgical education. Participants will also be enlightened about the need for fellowship training in certain specialties after surgical residency training. Participants will have a better understanding of the covered topics and be able to more effectively provide guidance to those in training programs or considering a career in surgery.

ICS Surgical Forum - Plenary Session
Representing 18 surgically related specialties, the ICSUS CME program is rich in diversity. This educational session includes a variety of subjects that seek to provide educational content that improves the learner's competence, performance or patient outcomes through interaction with peers.  Due to the varied membership of our global organization, this educational session encourages participants from a variety of specialties to interact and learn from one another, building a broad base of knowledge.

Topics covered during this session will provide participants with information related to the specialties of general surgery, colon and rectal surgery, obstetrics & gynecology, pediatric surgery and bariatric surgery, as well as a little bit of history. Learners will improve their knowledge pertaining to specialties in which they may not practice, thereby making them well-rounded. Participants whose specialties are being covered will obtain updates as well as new information that will improve patient care.

3:30 PM to 4:30 PM                              Annual Ethics Forum
Vaccination of health care professionals has recently grabbed the attention of public health officials and much of the public. However, many health care workers resist vaccination. Nationwide, fewer than half receive vaccines each year for the more common seasonal flu. To achieve high r vaccination rates, a more aggressive approach is needed than simply informing health care workers and hoping they will receive vaccines on their own. Attendees will hear from an infectious disease expert about the pros and cons surrounding this highly debated topic and will be given an opportunity to discuss their views and provide personal examples of their experience in this interactive session. Upon completion of this session learners will have a better understanding of the issues surrounding this controversial topic.

Vaccinations for Healthcare Professionals
Vilma Drelichman, MD

Section Chief of Infectious Diseases, Department of Internal Medicine, Providence Hospital
Southfield, MI

4:30 PM to 6:00 PM                            Global Surgery
A founding principle of ICS is to participate in humanitarian activities and attempt to provide surgical care to those in areas where it is not readily available. Historically, surgery has not been considered a health priority due to the inaccurate perception that high cost interventions benefit only a limited proportion of the population. Surgical care for approximately 2 billion people around the world is under-prioritized and underfunded. Recently the WHO's World Health Assembly Executive Board passed a resolution that seeks to strengthen emergency and essential surgical care around the world. This session will include presentations from members of the ICS who will provide firsthand accounts of what is needed and how it can be provided. In addition, an update will be presented pertaining to WHO activities addressing this global health crisis. Participants will learn what has been done and what they can do to improve patient care for all citizens of the world.
